Political Rivalries Emerge Ahead of Moroccan Elections

As Morocco gears up for elections on September 23, political tensions are rising among the ruling coalition. The National Rally of Independents (RNI), the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), and the Istiqlal Party are not only partners in governance but also fierce competitors for voter support. A leaked recording has intensified these rivalries, revealing internal disputes over key government positions, particularly concerning budget minister Fouzi Lekjaa.

This discord raises critical questions for voters about the integrity of the electoral process. If party leaders are already negotiating government roles before ballots are cast, it may undermine public confidence in the election’s legitimacy. The RNI, which won the most seats in the last election, is keen to maintain its dominance, while PAM and Istiqlal are eager to increase their influence.

Opposition parties, particularly the Justice and Development Party (PJD), are poised to capitalize on any dissatisfaction with the current government. Despite a significant loss in the last election, the PJD aims to regain support by addressing pressing issues like economic challenges and public services.

The upcoming election is not just about who leads but also about how the political landscape will shift in Morocco. With 15.8 million registered voters, the stakes are high, and the outcome will shape the future of governance in the country.
