Haiti’s Call for International Support Amid Gang Violence

Haiti’s government is urging the United Nations Security Council to renew the mandate of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) as violence from armed groups escalates. With elections scheduled for December, the Foreign Minister has highlighted the urgent need for international assistance to ensure safety and stability.

The GSF, established to combat gang violence, faces a mandate expiration on September 30. The Haitian government is concerned that without an extension, the ongoing violence could jeopardize the electoral process, which is critical for restoring public confidence in governance.

Recent reports indicate a staggering rise in violence, with over 1,400 deaths attributed to gangs in just three months. This situation has displaced more than one million people, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis and raising questions about the feasibility of the upcoming elections.

International efforts have faced criticism, as many Haitians are sceptical about foreign intervention. The GSF’s effectiveness will depend on sustained support and coordination with local authorities to address not only the violence but also the underlying issues of poverty and corruption that fuel instability.
