The Hilltop Girls: A New Face of Settlement Expansion in the West Bank

A group of young Israeli women, known as the ‘Hilltop Girls’, is adopting a domestic lifestyle on hilltops in the West Bank, which is part of a broader strategy to expand illegal settlements. Unlike their male counterparts, who have been associated with violence, these women aim to normalise their presence through everyday activities, such as cooking and laundry, while pursuing the establishment of a ‘Greater Israel’. This approach allows them to quietly facilitate land grabs, presenting their actions as benign rather than aggressive.

The Hilltop Girls are linked to the radical Hilltop Youth movement, which has a history of seizing land. Their activities are supported by the Israeli government, which provides logistical assistance and financial subsidies. This backing enables the establishment of outposts like Maoz Esther and Or Ahuvia, which are expanding rapidly and are seen as part of a long-term plan to create a network of settlements that could absorb thousands of families.

Despite their claims of non-violence, the Hilltop Girls’ presence contributes to a significant increase in settler violence against Palestinians. Reports indicate that settler attacks have surged, with thousands of incidents recorded, undermining the potential for a viable Palestinian state. The Israeli government’s legislative support for these outposts further complicates the situation, as it solidifies the settlers’ claims to the land.

The implications of this movement extend beyond immediate land disputes; they signal a shift in settlement strategies that could have lasting impacts on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As these women continue to establish their presence, the potential for escalating tensions and violence remains high, raising concerns about the future of peace in the region.
