Progress on HS2: First Platforms Completed at Old Oak Common

The completion of the first platforms at Old Oak Common marks a significant milestone in the troubled HS2 project. This £4.3 billion station in West London is set to become a crucial hub for high-speed rail services connecting London to Birmingham. Despite ongoing delays and rising costs, the platform completion offers a glimmer of hope for supporters of HS2, who have faced years of setbacks.

The new line promises to reduce travel time from London Euston to Birmingham to just 49 minutes, a substantial improvement over current journey times. However, recent announcements indicate that trains will operate at speeds 25mph slower than initially planned, raising questions about the project’s efficiency and overall value.

As construction progresses, the focus will shift to building surface-level platforms and completing the station’s impressive roof. This development is expected to transform the local area, creating a vibrant neighbourhood around the transport hub, which could stimulate economic growth and improve connectivity.

While the completion of the platforms is a positive step, the full operational capacity of HS2 may not be realised until 2039, with costs projected to exceed £100 billion. The ongoing developments highlight the complexities and challenges of delivering large-scale infrastructure projects in the UK.
