Gordonstoun Students Uncover Viking Church on Remote Scottish Island

Students from Gordonstoun School have made a remarkable archaeological discovery on Swona, an uninhabited island in Orkney. During a six-day expedition, they uncovered the ruins of what appears to be a medieval Viking church, believed to date back to the 10th or 11th century. This find not only enriches the historical narrative of the region but also highlights the potential for further archaeological exploration in Scotland’s remote areas.

The church’s remains, including what is thought to be the altar’s foundation, were found beneath a later structure. The discovery was made in collaboration with professionals from the Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology, showcasing the educational value of hands-on learning in archaeology. The students’ involvement in this project fosters a deeper connection to their heritage and encourages interest in historical research.

The expedition also provided a unique living experience, as students stayed in an abandoned crofting cottage without modern amenities. This immersive environment allowed them to appreciate the challenges faced by past communities while engaging in archaeological work. Participants expressed a strong sense of camaraderie and personal growth through their shared experiences.

As radiocarbon dating of the samples is planned, the implications of this discovery could reshape our understanding of Viking presence in Scotland. It serves as a reminder of the hidden historical treasures that lie beneath the surface, waiting to be uncovered by future generations.
