Bakery Faces Heavy Fine After Worker Injury

A bakery in Kent has been fined £333,333 after a worker suffered severe injuries while cleaning a sausage roll conveyor belt. The incident occurred when the worker’s arm became entangled in the machinery, resulting in multiple fractures.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) conducted an investigation and found that David Wood Baking Limited had not implemented adequate safety measures to prevent access to dangerous parts of the conveyor line. This oversight highlights a significant gap in workplace safety protocols that could have dire consequences for employees.

The court’s ruling serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to health and safety regulations. HSE inspector Delcina Burden emphasized that such injuries are often preventable with proper guarding and safety measures in place.

This case not only impacts the bakery’s finances but also raises questions about the broader implications for workplace safety across the food manufacturing industry. Companies must take proactive steps to ensure employee safety to avoid similar penalties and protect their workforce.
