Three Years After Morocco Earthquake: Survivors Still Struggle for Aid

Three years after the devastating earthquake in Morocco, many survivors are still grappling with inadequate support. While some areas have seen significant reconstruction, others remain in dire straits, highlighting a stark divide in recovery efforts. In Ighermane, about 90% of homes have been rebuilt, yet in nearby Azgour, many families still live in tents, waiting for promised aid.

The disparity in recovery raises questions about the effectiveness of government assistance. Some residents, like Larbi Ait Jelloulat, express frustration over bureaucratic hurdles that prevent them from receiving aid. Despite the government allocating over 7.2 billion dirhams for reconstruction, thousands of families report being overlooked, often due to residency issues linked to employment relocations.

Architects and local officials acknowledge the challenges faced in remote areas, including logistical difficulties and the need for skilled labour. While some believe the pace of reconstruction is commendable given the circumstances, the voices of those still waiting for help underscore the human cost of the disaster.

As Morocco approaches its next general election, the plight of earthquake victims may influence political discourse. Advocacy groups are calling for transparency and accountability in aid distribution, urging the government to prioritize the needs of its citizens over mere statistics. The ongoing struggle for justice and support reflects broader societal issues that could shape future policies.
