New Public Housing Portal Aims to Ease Access to Affordable Homes

The launch of CASA 47, Spain’s first national public housing portal, marks a significant shift in how citizens can access affordable housing. With an initial offering of 800 homes and plans to add 1,500 more soon, this initiative aims to simplify the often complex process of finding a home. The portal allows users to search for available properties based on their financial situation, ensuring a more tailored approach to housing needs.

One of the key features of CASA 47 is its commitment to keeping rents affordable, with a cap of 30% of an applicant’s income. This is particularly crucial in high-pressure areas where housing costs have skyrocketed. The government has pledged that these homes will remain part of the public stock indefinitely, preventing them from being sold off in the future, which addresses past issues of losing affordable housing.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has defended this interventionist approach, arguing that the housing market is broken and requires government action to restore balance. The initiative is part of a broader strategy that includes a significant increase in the housing budget, aiming to mobilise over 120,000 affordable rental homes.

As the portal expands, it will not only provide immediate housing solutions but also set a precedent for future public housing initiatives. This could reshape the landscape of affordable housing in Spain, potentially influencing similar policies in other countries, including the UK, where housing affordability remains a pressing issue.
