First Derivative, a tech firm based in Newry, has announced a significant investment of £15.3 million aimed at bolstering its capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI). This funding will create 100 new jobs, with 70 positions located in Newry and the remainder in Belfast, expanding the company’s workforce to approximately 600 employees. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to establish a centre of excellence in AI and fintech, positioning First Derivative at the forefront of technological advancements in the financial services sector.

The investment is not just about job creation; it reflects a strategic shift towards advanced AI technologies that can solve complex problems for clients globally. With 12 to 13 projects already underway, this move could enhance the company’s competitive edge and attract further investment into Northern Ireland’s tech landscape. The involvement of Invest NI, which provided over £3 million in support, underscores the importance of regional balance in economic development.

Critics have previously pointed out the uneven distribution of investments across Northern Ireland, particularly favouring Belfast. However, this announcement is a step towards addressing those concerns, with Invest NI aiming for 65% of future investments to be outside the capital. This could lead to a more balanced economic growth across the region, benefiting areas that have historically received less attention.

As the tech industry evolves, First Derivative’s commitment to AI could set a precedent for other firms in Northern Ireland. The focus on high-quality jobs and productivity improvements aligns with the government’s economic vision, potentially reshaping the local job market and attracting talent to the area. This investment may also inspire other companies to follow suit, further enhancing the region’s reputation as a hub for technological innovation.
