The United Nations has warned that renewed fighting in Yemen is likely to displace thousands, with projections suggesting up to 10,000 people could flee to Djibouti. The recent seizure of Yemen’s Red Sea coastline by Houthi rebels has intensified the humanitarian crisis, potentially displacing an additional 230,000 individuals internally.
Currently, there are over 5.2 million people already displaced within Yemen, and the situation is worsening as conflict escalates. A spokesperson for the UNHCR highlighted that the agency is preparing for significant increases in arrivals in Djibouti, especially as sea conditions are expected to improve in mid-October.
The humanitarian response is critically underfunded, with only 18 percent of the necessary funds secured for operations in Yemen. An urgent appeal for $25 million has been made to aid approximately 231,000 people in need of immediate assistance. Meanwhile, Djibouti’s operations are similarly underfunded, raising concerns about the capacity to support incoming refugees.
This situation underscores the urgent need for international support to address the escalating humanitarian crisis and to provide essential services to those affected by the conflict and displacement.
