Farmers Left Disappointed as Sustainable Funding Exhausted in Hours

The recent allocation of England’s sustainable farming incentive (SFI) budget has left thousands of farmers without support, as the entire £233 million was claimed within just six hours. This rapid depletion highlights a significant gap in the government’s planning and budget management, raising concerns about the future of sustainable agriculture in the UK.

Farmers were eager to apply for funding, especially after the scheme’s abrupt closure in March 2025. The SFI is crucial for supporting environmental goals and transitioning to sustainable farming practices, yet the first-come, first-served nature of the application process has resulted in many missing out entirely. This could have dire implications for food security and environmental restoration efforts.

The scramble for funding has been likened to the rush for concert tickets, underscoring the desperation among farmers facing challenges like rising costs and extreme weather conditions. The inability to secure funding may hinder their capacity to invest in sustainable practices, which are essential for meeting the government’s legally binding nature targets.

With the next opportunity for funding not until 2027, there are urgent calls for the government to reassess its approach to agricultural support. Increased transparency and a more robust budget allocation are necessary to ensure that farmers can contribute effectively to environmental goals and maintain resilience in their operations.
