Scotland Considers Knife Amnesty Amid Rising Youth Violence

Following the recent murders of two young men, the Scottish government is contemplating a knife amnesty to address escalating knife crime among youths. Justice Secretary Neil Gray highlighted the alarming 15% rise in knife possession among 11 to 15-year-olds since 2019, indicating a troubling trend that could have long-term societal implications.

The proposed amnesty could mirror the successful 2006 initiative, where over 12,500 weapons were surrendered without legal repercussions. However, Gray emphasised that the focus should be on prevention, aiming to deter young people from carrying knives in the first place. This shift in strategy reflects a growing recognition of the need for proactive measures rather than reactive responses to violence.

Community leaders, like former gang member Kevin Martin, warn that funding cuts to youth organisations risk reversing progress made in reducing knife crime. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on community engagement has left a gap that may be contributing to the current surge in violence, highlighting the importance of sustained investment in youth services.

As discussions continue, the potential for a knife amnesty raises questions about its effectiveness and the broader societal changes needed to combat the root causes of youth violence. The government’s commitment to a preventative approach will be crucial in shaping future policies and ensuring the safety of communities across Scotland.
