M&S Aims to Combat Youth Unemployment with New Traineeship

Marks and Spencer (M&S) is launching a new traineeship programme aimed at 1,000 young people in the UK and Ireland, targeting those aged 16 to 24. This initiative comes in response to the alarming rise in youth unemployment, with over one million young people currently classified as not in employment, education, or training (Neet). The programme will offer six months of paid training, with the potential for participants to progress to store management roles.

The significance of this scheme lies in its potential to reshape perceptions of retail careers. M&S hopes to encourage young people to view retail not merely as a temporary job but as a viable long-term career path. This shift is crucial as many entry-level positions are disappearing, exacerbated by factors such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the rise of technology.

Additionally, the government is collaborating with industry leaders to assess how artificial intelligence is transforming entry-level roles, which could further impact job availability for young people. This partnership aims to ensure that despite technological advancements, pathways into the workforce remain accessible.

As M&S embarks on this initiative, it highlights a growing recognition of the need to address youth unemployment proactively. The success of this traineeship could serve as a model for other retailers and industries, ultimately influencing how young people engage with the job market in the future.
