In a remarkable development for Yemen’s healthcare, the Cardiac and Vascular Diseases and Kidney Transplant Center in Taiz is transforming lives by providing affordable and lifesaving surgeries. Recently, a multi-national team performed complex heart surgeries on 110 children, marking a significant milestone in the country’s medical capabilities despite ongoing conflict.
This facility has conducted over 1,450 open-heart surgeries and 164 kidney transplants since its inception in 2021, offering treatments that would otherwise be financially out of reach for many Yemenis. The cost of heart surgery abroad can soar to $20,000, while the center in Taiz charges just $5,000, making it a beacon of hope for patients who previously faced insurmountable barriers to care.
The center’s recent expansion into liver transplants could further revolutionise healthcare in Yemen, potentially establishing a sustainable programme for treating liver diseases. This initiative not only alleviates the burden on families but also fosters local medical expertise, as Yemeni doctors gain invaluable experience performing complex procedures.
