A recent study reveals that babies born to anaemic mothers exhibit smaller brain sizes, particularly in areas crucial for movement, learning, and emotional regulation. This finding, observed as early as one year, raises concerns about potential cognitive difficulties as these children enter school.
The research, conducted by King’s College London and the University of Cape Town, tracked over 300 mothers and their infants in Cape Town. It found that the average brain volume of babies born to anaemic mothers was 4% smaller than those born to non-anaemic mothers, with the gap widening as the children aged. Key brain regions affected include the putamen, caudate nucleus, and corpus callosum.
The implications of these findings are significant, suggesting that maternal anaemia could lead to long-term cognitive challenges for children. The study highlights the urgent need for improved screening and treatment for anaemia in pregnant women, particularly in regions where the condition is prevalent.
As anaemia rates remain high globally, especially among women of reproductive age, addressing this public health issue is critical. The study advocates for iron supplementation and better management of underlying health conditions, such as infectious diseases, to ensure healthier outcomes for future generations.
