Thailand’s Princess Bajrakitiyabha Passes Away, Succession Questions Arise

Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol, the eldest child of Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn, has died at the age of 47 after nearly four years in a coma. Her health deteriorated significantly following a heart condition that led to her hospitalisation in December 2022. The palace reported multiple organ infections and complications that ultimately proved fatal.

Her death raises critical questions about the future of the Thai monarchy, particularly regarding succession. Bajrakitiyabha was seen as a potential heir, a role that has never been officially addressed due to Thailand’s strict lese majesty laws, which limit public discourse on the royal family. This situation is compounded by the king’s complex family dynamics, including his four marriages and seven children.

Bajrakitiyabha’s passing could lead to shifts in royal responsibilities, especially concerning her younger brother, Prince Dipangkorn, who has learning difficulties. Speculation about her potential regency or even queenship has now been extinguished, leaving the royal succession uncertain in a nation where such discussions are fraught with legal peril.

As Thailand navigates this transition, the implications for the monarchy’s public perception and stability are significant. The absence of a ruling queen in Thai history adds another layer of complexity to the royal lineage, potentially impacting the monarchy’s future role in Thai society.
