Zimbabwe’s Climate Migrants Face Eviction Amid Government Crackdown

As Zimbabwe intensifies its crackdown on illegal settlements, climate migrants in the Eastern Highlands are facing uncertainty. Many of these individuals relocated to this fertile region after drought devastated their home areas, seeking arable land to sustain their families. However, the government’s recent announcements signal a tough stance on what it deems illegal settlements, raising fears of eviction for those who have built new lives in the highlands.

The government argues that this crackdown is necessary to restore order and protect the environment, but for many migrants, their relocation was driven by dire climatic conditions rather than land speculation. The lack of a specific policy addressing climate-induced migration leaves these individuals vulnerable, as they are often classified as illegal occupiers without legal recourse.

Experts highlight that these settlements, while not a long-term solution, have become a coping mechanism for families affected by climate change. The situation is further complicated by the absence of structured responses to climate-driven displacement, which could provide a pathway for legal settlement.

As the government prepares to enforce stricter measures, migrants like Lloyd Gweshengwe express their desperation, stating, “We don’t have anywhere else to go.” The looming threat of eviction underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to address the challenges posed by climate change and migration in Zimbabwe.
