Social Media Ban for Under-16s: A Step Towards Safer Online Spaces

The UK government has announced a ban on social media platforms for users under 16, a move hailed by bereaved mother Ellen Roome. She believes the ban, set to take effect by spring 2027, is a crucial step in protecting children from harmful online challenges, like the one that led to her son Jools Sweeney’s tragic death in 2022.

Roome expressed optimism about the ban, stating that while it may not be perfect, it represents progress in safeguarding young users. She emphasised the need for ongoing monitoring of emerging platforms to ensure that children remain protected as new technologies develop.

The government aims to shift power from tech companies back to parents, with Technology Secretary Liz Kendall calling the ban a bold initiative for creating a safer online environment. However, some social media firms, like YouTube and Snapchat, have raised concerns that such a ban might drive young users to less secure platforms.

Roome advocates for comprehensive education on social media’s risks, urging that children be taught about online safety just as they are about offline dangers. This educational approach is seen as vital for fostering a generation that understands the implications of their digital interactions.
