Rising Costs of Parliament Renovation: What You Need to Know

Delays in the renovation of the UK Parliament could lead to an additional £420 million in costs each year, according to the National Audit Office (NAO). This significant financial burden arises from the ongoing deterioration of the Palace of Westminster, which faces issues like outdated mechanical systems and fire safety hazards.

Currently, Parliament spends approximately £1.5 million weekly on maintenance, highlighting the urgency of the restoration. However, the project has stalled due to concerns over its estimated total cost, which could reach tens of billions of pounds, and the logistical challenges of relocating MPs and Lords during the renovations.

The NAO’s report suggests that each year of delay not only increases costs but also prolongs the risk of further deterioration of the historic building. Options for restoration range from phased projects lasting up to 61 years to a full decant that could take nearly two decades, with costs varying significantly based on the chosen approach.

Decisions on how to proceed are expected by mid-2030, with initial works proposed to last seven years at a cost of up to £3 billion. The implications of these delays extend beyond finances, potentially affecting the operational efficiency of Parliament and the preservation of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
