A father has faced police reprimand after leaving his seven-year-old son alone on Mount Fuji while he continued hiking. The incident occurred when the boy expressed fatigue at the sixth station, approximately 2,490 metres up the mountain. Instead of turning back or resting, the father instructed his son to wait while he ascended further with his older son.
Hours later, the boy was discovered by a mountain hut worker, sitting alone as weather conditions deteriorated. This situation raised alarms about the dangers of hiking, particularly with children, as conditions on Mount Fuji can change rapidly. The worker brought the boy inside for safety and alerted authorities.
Police located the father at the eighth station and urged him to return immediately. Upon their reunion, he was scolded for his decision, which he later regretted, acknowledging it as a rash choice. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety and responsibility when hiking, especially in challenging environments.
Authorities have since issued warnings to other hikers, emphasising the need to stay together and adjust pace according to the least capable member of the group. With thousands climbing Mount Fuji each summer, this incident highlights the critical need for awareness and caution in outdoor activities.
