Ukraine has officially entered the first phase of negotiations to join the European Union, a significant step after years of delays primarily due to Hungary’s vetoes. This milestone, celebrated by EU officials, marks the start of a complex process that will require Ukraine to implement extensive political reforms while still engaged in a conflict with Russia.
The negotiations will involve aligning Ukraine’s laws and standards with EU regulations across 35 chapters, covering various sectors from agriculture to justice. Despite the initial progress, the journey to full membership is expected to be lengthy and fraught with challenges, as any EU member state can halt the process at any time.
Political dynamics within the EU also play a crucial role. With Hungary’s previous opposition now lifted, other countries may express their hesitations about rapid enlargement. Some EU leaders have suggested alternative arrangements, such as granting Ukraine an associate membership without voting rights, which raises concerns in Kyiv about being left in a prolonged state of limbo.
As Ukraine pushes for a clear timeline for accession, the EU faces pressure to balance its enlargement ambitions with internal governance challenges. The outcome of these negotiations will not only affect Ukraine’s future but also shape the EU’s political landscape and its approach to integrating new members.
