Abandoned Monkey on London Bus Raises Animal Welfare Concerns

A common marmoset, affectionately named Oyster, was discovered abandoned on a London bus, highlighting serious animal welfare issues. The incident occurred when a mother with a buggy found her path blocked by a laundry bag, which concealed the frightened monkey inside a cage. The bus driver’s quick action to remove the bag led to the shocking discovery, prompting the RSPCA to step in.

Oyster is now safe at a sanctuary, but this case raises alarms about the potential rise in abandoned primates due to new licensing laws in England. With an estimated 5,000 primates kept as pets, many owners may struggle to comply with the new regulations, leading to fears that abandonment could become more common.

The RSPCA is investigating the circumstances surrounding Oyster’s abandonment, reviewing CCTV footage to identify the person responsible. Chief Inspector Clare Dew expressed concern that this incident might not be isolated, as the new legislation could inadvertently encourage owners to abandon their pets rather than seek help.

Animal welfare experts stress that primates require social interaction and proper care that cannot be provided by humans alone. The introduction of licensing is a positive step, but it must be accompanied by support for pet owners to prevent tragic outcomes for these intelligent creatures.
