Accident at Surrey Activity Centre Injures Children

A serious accident at the PGL Activity Centre in Surrey has left 18 individuals injured, including multiple children. Emergency services responded swiftly to reports of a fallen tree at the centre, which was hosting several school groups at the time. One child suffered a severe leg injury and was airlifted to a London hospital, while six others were taken to a local hospital with less severe injuries. The remaining 11 were treated on-site and released.

The incident raises concerns about safety protocols at outdoor activity centres, especially given PGL’s recent history of legal issues related to safety. In 2023, the company was fined £1 million after two children were injured during an organised stay, highlighting potential vulnerabilities in their operational safety measures. This latest accident may prompt further scrutiny from regulatory bodies and parents alike.

PGL has stated that the safety and wellbeing of the children is their top priority and is working closely with the affected schools to provide timely updates to families. Local MP Gregory Stafford expressed his concern for the injured children and praised the emergency services for their prompt response. As investigations continue, the incident could lead to changes in how outdoor activities are managed and regulated in the UK.

Parents and guardians may now be more cautious about sending their children to such centres, potentially impacting PGL’s business and the broader outdoor activity sector. The incident serves as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with adventure activities and the importance of rigorous safety standards.
