AI Complaints Surge Strains Public Services

The rise of AI-assisted complaints is significantly impacting local councils and schools across the UK. Complaints that once fit on a single A4 page are now stretching to 20 pages, filled with complex legal arguments and misquoted legislation. This increase in volume and complexity is overwhelming public bodies, which are struggling to keep up with the demand for responses.

Deborah Evans, chief executive of Lawyers in Local Government, highlights that the current workforce is insufficient to handle the surge, suggesting that councils would need to double their complaint-handling staff. This could lead to slower response times, frustrating both complainants and public service workers alike.

While AI has made it easier for individuals, particularly those with writing difficulties, to voice their grievances, it has also led to a rise in trivial complaints. This trend complicates the resolution process and adds to the workload of already stretched public sector employees.

As AI continues to be integrated into the complaint process, public authorities may need to adopt new strategies, such as limiting complaint lengths, to manage the influx effectively. However, there are concerns that such measures could be seen as limiting accountability, creating a delicate balance between accessibility and efficiency.
