Andrew Bailey, Chair of the Financial Stability Board and Governor of the Bank of England, has issued a stark warning about the risks posed by emerging AI models to the global economy. In a letter to G20 finance ministers, he highlighted that these advanced systems could exploit vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure, including banking systems, potentially leading to widespread financial instability.
Bailey’s concerns come amid a backdrop of global economic uncertainty, exacerbated by rising energy prices and inflation driven by geopolitical tensions and significant AI investments in the US. He pointed out that the rapid development of AI technologies, such as the advanced model Mythos, could alter the landscape of cyber risk, undermining market confidence and resilience.
The Governor stressed the importance of international cooperation in establishing robust protocols for AI deployment, as disruptions can have far-reaching consequences beyond national borders. He urged jurisdictions to enhance their cybersecurity measures and prepare for an environment with increasing vulnerabilities and rapid technological changes.
As the G20 prepares to meet in December, the focus will be on how to manage these emerging threats effectively. Bailey’s call for proactive measures highlights the urgent need for a coordinated global response to safeguard financial stability in an era of rapid technological advancement.
