AI’s Role in Modern Dating for Young Adults

The rise of AI in dating apps like Hinge is reshaping how young adults connect. Jackie Jantos, Hinge’s CEO, highlights that many single 20-somethings struggle with confidence, making it difficult for them to initiate conversations. This reliance on AI prompts to break the ice reflects a broader trend of decreased in-person socialisation among Gen Z, who reportedly spend 1,000 fewer hours a year socialising compared to previous generations.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated feelings of loneliness, with nearly half of Gen Z in the UK feeling lonely often. Jantos argues that Hinge’s AI tools are not about replacing genuine interactions but rather about empowering users to express themselves more confidently. This shift in dating dynamics raises questions about the long-term effects of technology on personal relationships.

Experts like Dr Carolina Bandinelli note that dating apps have not delivered on their promise of easy connections, leading to a sense of burnout among users. The challenge now is for these platforms to evolve and foster meaningful connections rather than just facilitate endless swiping. As young adults navigate this new landscape, the balance between technology and authentic human interaction remains crucial.

With the changing preferences of Gen Z, who favour quality over quantity in relationships, dating apps may need to adapt further. The trend of prioritising fitness and wellness over traditional nightlife suggests a shift in social habits that could redefine how relationships are formed in the future.
