Albania’s ambition to join the EU is under threat due to plans for a luxury resort backed by Jared Kushner. The proposed development, which encroaches on protected shorelines and wildlife zones, has raised alarms among European lawmakers. Tineke Strik, a Dutch MEP, warned that the Albanian government is jeopardising its EU accession talks by pursuing this €1.4 billion project, which could violate EU environmental policies.
The backlash has sparked widespread protests, dubbed the ‘flamingo revolution,’ with citizens demanding accountability from their government. Strik emphasised that the Albanian leadership must prioritise EU compliance over lucrative deals with foreign investors. The ongoing unrest reflects a deep-rooted desire among Albanians for EU membership, with 92% supporting the goal.
As the Albanian government pushes forward with the resort plans, it risks alienating EU officials and delaying its accession timeline, initially set for 2027. The European Parliament has called for an immediate halt to construction in protected areas, highlighting the potential long-term consequences for Albania’s environmental integrity and democratic values.
The situation underscores a critical juncture for Albania, where the government must balance economic development with environmental stewardship and public sentiment. Failure to heed these warnings could derail Albania’s EU aspirations and undermine the progress made in recent years.
