AliExpress Faces Record Fine in EU for Safety Violations

AliExpress has been hit with a staggering €550 million fine by EU regulators, marking the largest penalty under the Digital Services Act. This action highlights significant concerns over the platform’s failure to adequately address the sale of illegal and unsafe products, including counterfeit goods and dangerous items. The European Commission’s Vice President, Henna Virkkunen, emphasized that the spread of such products is a direct result of AliExpress not fulfilling its legal obligations.

The fine comes as AliExpress, which boasts 193 million users in the EU, plans to appeal the decision, claiming the penalty is excessive. The company argues that it has made substantial improvements to its risk management framework and has been proactive in addressing the EU’s concerns. However, regulators remain unconvinced, stating that previous measures were insufficient to resolve broader issues.

This case raises important questions about consumer safety in online shopping, particularly as more people turn to platforms like AliExpress, Shein, and Temu. With one in five Europeans reportedly shopping monthly from these sites, the implications of such fines could lead to stricter regulations and increased scrutiny of e-commerce practices across the EU.

As AliExpress prepares to submit a compliance plan by October 20, the outcome could set a precedent for how online marketplaces operate within the EU, potentially reshaping the landscape of e-commerce and consumer protection in the region.
