Ancient Church Seeks Solar Panels to Combat Rising Energy Costs

St Luke’s Church in Widnes, Cheshire, is appealing to Halton Borough Council for permission to install 17 solar panels on its historic roof. Dating back to 1180, this Grade II listed building aims to cut soaring energy costs and secure its future as a community hub.

The church’s gas heating bills have surged from £1,000 to £1,700, prompting the need for renewable energy solutions. The proposed solar installation could generate around 8,160kWh of electricity annually, covering nearly half of the church’s energy needs.

This initiative is not just about reducing expenses; it’s crucial for the church’s long-term sustainability and its ability to continue serving the community, especially during colder months when heating demands peak.

The church’s application highlights a careful design to preserve its historical integrity, ensuring that no significant alterations are made to its structure. As the council reviews the proposal, the outcome could set a precedent for how historic buildings adapt to modern energy challenges.
