Ancient Kent Woodland Faces Quarry Expansion Threat

Plans to expand a quarry in Kent threaten the ancient Oaken Wood, a site rich in biodiversity and history. The Reform-run council has identified 40 hectares of this woodland as a potential quarry site, raising concerns among environmentalists and local residents. Oaken Wood, continuously wooded since at least 1600, is home to various wildlife and plays a crucial role in carbon absorption and soil health.

The council argues that the stone beneath the wood is essential for conservation projects, including the restoration of historic buildings. However, critics highlight the irreplaceable nature of the woodland ecosystem, which cannot simply be recreated elsewhere. The proposed quarry expansion has sparked significant public opposition, with over 25,000 voices raised against it in a recent consultation.

Environmental campaigners warn that the removal of the wood would disrupt a complex living system, not just the trees themselves. The Gallagher Group, which operates the existing quarry, claims they would replant more than double the trees removed, but many remain sceptical about the effectiveness of such measures. The ongoing debate reflects a broader tension between development and conservation in the UK.

As the council moves forward with its plans, the future of Oaken Wood hangs in the balance, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable practices that prioritise ecological integrity over short-term economic gains. The outcome could set a precedent for how ancient woodlands are treated in the face of development pressures.
