A remarkable archaeological find has emerged off the coast of Sicily, where a Roman shipwreck dating back over 2,000 years has been discovered. This significant wreck, located approximately 50 metres underwater near Mazara del Vallo, was uncovered by specialist police divers known as the ‘Art Squad’. The discovery was prompted by local fishermen who reported the site, leading to an investigation by the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage.

The shipwreck is believed to date from the first or second century BC and is filled with hundreds of well-preserved ceramic jars, known as amphorae, which were used for transporting wine, oil, and grain. Archaeologists have described the wreck as being in excellent condition, highlighting its importance in understanding ancient trade routes and cultural exchanges in the Mediterranean.

This find not only sheds light on the maritime history of the region but also underscores Sicily’s role as a vital trading hub during ancient times. The Italian Culture Minister has emphasized the need for ongoing research to fully document and protect the site, ensuring that it contributes to our understanding of historical interactions across civilisations.

As protective measures are set to be implemented, this discovery serves as a reminder of the treasures that lie beneath the sea and the stories they can tell about our past. The excitement surrounding the find reflects a growing interest in underwater archaeology and its potential to reveal hidden aspects of history.
