Recent research from Peking University reveals alarming levels of mercury being released into Antarctic waters due to melting ice caps. As ice sheets retreat, they expose centuries-old mercury deposits, significantly impacting the region’s ecosystem. The study shows that mercury accumulation on the continental shelf has surged to 93 micrograms per square metre annually, double the global average, and has increased by 160% since the onset of industrialisation.
The findings highlight a 550% rise in mercury levels in glacial runoff, posing severe risks to wildlife, particularly seabirds, with many now exceeding safe mercury thresholds. This situation is exacerbated by industrial activities that have increased atmospheric mercury emissions, leading to dangerous concentrations in marine food webs.
Two main processes are driving this mercury release: warming temperatures are accelerating ice melt, while the thawing ice releases previously trapped mercury. This combination allows phytoplankton to flourish, further drawing mercury from the atmosphere and contributing to its accumulation in the food chain.
The implications for Antarctic ecology are profound, as the region’s unique wildlife faces heightened toxicity risks. With nearly 90% of glaciers in the Antarctic Peninsula retreating rapidly, the ongoing melt threatens to unleash even more mercury, raising concerns about long-term environmental impacts and the health of marine ecosystems.
