A popular car park in Colchester, Essex, is set to close temporarily to facilitate archaeological investigations at a site with historical significance dating back to the Norman conquest. The Britannia Car Park will see 92 parking bays taken out of service as experts from the Colchester Archaeological Trust begin their work, which is crucial for understanding the area’s historical context ahead of future redevelopment plans.
The closure, starting July 20, is part of the St Botolph’s Quarter project, aimed at revitalising the area surrounding St Botolph’s Priory, a landmark dating back to around 1100. This site has suffered from neglect over the years, and the council is keen to enhance accessibility and appeal to both residents and visitors.
The archaeological work is expected to last up to seven weeks, during which specialists will assess the ground to uncover any historical remains. This early-stage investigation is vital for shaping future development proposals and ensuring that the rich history of the site is preserved and celebrated.
Councillor David King emphasised the importance of St Botolph’s Priory and the surrounding area, stating that the project aims to transform how people experience this historic asset. By improving footways and introducing better wayfinding, the council hopes to make the priory a more inviting destination for all.
