Armenian Tycoon Plans Monumental Jesus Statue Amid Controversy

Gagik Tsarukyan, a prominent Armenian businessman, is pushing forward with plans to erect the world’s tallest statue of Jesus Christ on a mountain overlooking Yerevan. This ambitious project, which aims to attract millions of tourists, is seen by Tsarukyan as a way to celebrate Armenia’s ancient Christian heritage. However, it has sparked significant backlash from the Armenian Apostolic Church and environmentalists, who argue that such a massive structure conflicts with the country’s architectural traditions and could harm the local landscape.

Despite these objections, Tsarukyan remains undeterred, claiming that the statue will serve as a new ‘calling card’ for Armenia. He envisions it as part of a broader global trend that intertwines nationalism with religious faith, similar to movements seen in other countries. The project, which has been under construction since 2022, is currently at a standstill, resembling an abandoned site rather than a future pilgrimage destination.

Tsarukyan’s wealth, amassed through various industries, has made him a controversial figure in Armenian politics, especially after his party’s poor performance in recent elections. Critics view him as a symbol of the oligarchic past that the current government seeks to dismantle. His plans for the statue could be interpreted as an attempt to solidify his legacy and influence, even as his political power wanes.

The statue’s completion timeline remains uncertain, and its future impact on Armenia’s cultural landscape is still being debated. As Tsarukyan pushes for this monumental project, the intersection of faith, nationalism, and personal ambition raises questions about the direction of Armenia’s identity in a rapidly changing world.
