A fire at a derelict building in Derry is being treated as arson by police. The incident occurred at the former North West Regional College facility on Carrakeel Drive, where firefighters battled the blaze for over three hours on Sunday evening.

Fire crews from multiple stations, including Northland Road and Crescent Link, were deployed to control the flames using two jets. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the fire has raised concerns about safety in the area, particularly regarding abandoned properties.

Authorities are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with CCTV footage from the vicinity to assist in their investigation. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of derelict buildings becoming targets for vandalism and arson, which can pose risks to nearby residents.

As the investigation unfolds, it may prompt discussions about the future of such properties in Derry and the need for increased security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
