Artist’s Journey to Save a Rare Phone Box Highlights Rural Communication Needs

William Arnold, a photographer and artist from Cornwall, has embarked on a remarkable 1,700-mile journey to save a unique red telephone box on the Isle of Lewis. This box, believed to be the last connected double-door kiosk in Britain, faces closure unless it receives at least 52 calls a year, as mandated by Ofcom regulations. Arnold’s mission involved placing 52 calls from the box, underscoring its importance as a vital communication link in rural areas.

The significance of this effort goes beyond mere nostalgia; it highlights the ongoing struggle for rural connectivity. With the decline of traditional payphones—down from 20,000 to about 9,000 in just two years—many communities are left vulnerable, particularly during emergencies when mobile coverage may fail. Arnold’s initiative serves as a reminder of the essential role these phone boxes play in public safety and community cohesion.

Arnold’s campaign began after a personal experience where he found a dead phone line in a box he hoped to use. This sparked his passion for preserving these kiosks, which he argues are crucial for areas lacking reliable mobile service. His calls, made under challenging weather conditions, were not just a means to save the box but also a call to action for locals to engage in maintaining this service.

As BT continues to review and remove payphones, Arnold hopes to inspire residents to make the necessary calls to keep the Einacleit box operational. His journey not only aims to save a piece of British heritage but also to advocate for better communication infrastructure in rural communities, ensuring they are not left behind in the digital age.
