Australia Takes Legal Action Against Telegram Over Terrorist Content

Australia’s eSafety Commissioner has initiated legal proceedings against Telegram for allegedly failing to remove terrorist content from its platform. The regulator claims that videos depicting terrorist executions and mass shootings remained accessible despite multiple reports from users. This legal action comes amid heightened security concerns in Australia, particularly following a recent antisemitic mass shooting in Sydney.

The potential fine for Telegram could reach AU$54.6 million, reflecting the seriousness of the allegations. The eSafety Commissioner highlighted that Telegram did not act on warnings issued between July and October 2025, allowing extremist content to proliferate. This inaction raises questions about the platform’s responsibility in moderating harmful material and protecting users.

Telegram has denied the allegations and plans to contest the case in court, asserting that it has taken steps to block extremist communities. However, the situation is compounded by recent developments in Russia, where Telegram’s founder faces charges related to facilitating terrorist activity, further complicating the platform’s global standing.

As the case unfolds, it could set a precedent for how social media platforms manage and regulate content, particularly in relation to national security. The outcome may influence future policies on online safety and the accountability of tech companies in Australia and beyond.
