The Azcatitlan Codex, a significant 16th-century manuscript, has returned to Mexico after being held in France for over a century. This rare artifact, which vividly depicts the history of the Aztecs through pictograms, is on display in Mexico City, marking a momentous occasion for cultural heritage and identity.

The codex chronicles the migration of the Mexica people from their mythical homeland to the founding of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital. Its return is not just a celebration of history but also a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for restitution of indigenous artifacts taken during colonial times.

As Mexico commemorates 200 years of diplomatic relations with France, the loan of this manuscript highlights the importance of cultural exchanges. It serves as a symbol of healing and reconnection for indigenous communities, who view the codex as a vital link to their ancestral heritage.

The exhibition has sparked enthusiasm among indigenous groups, who see this as a victory in their quest for the return of other significant cultural items. The codex will remain on display until December, allowing many to engage with a piece of their history that was long hidden away.
