As the summer bank holiday approaches, the UK is bracing for an unprecedented surge in leisure travel, with an estimated 20 million trips planned over the four-day weekend. This marks the busiest bank holiday getaway in over a decade, with Friday alone expected to see 4.1 million journeys. The RAC warns that traffic congestion will be significant, particularly on ‘Frantic Friday’, urging drivers to plan ahead and consider leaving before 10am to avoid delays.
The rising cost of fuel, driven by geopolitical tensions, is also impacting travel plans. With petrol prices soaring to around £89 for a typical family car, many drivers are reconsidering their trips. An RAC survey revealed that 13% of respondents have cancelled their plans due to high fuel costs, while others are looking to cut back on accommodation and dining expenses.
In addition to road congestion, rail travel will face disruptions, particularly on the East Coast Main Line, which will be closed for maintenance on Sunday. This could lead to increased pressure on road networks as passengers seek alternative transport options.
With warm weather expected, the combination of high travel volumes and potential traffic jams means that drivers should prepare adequately. Basic vehicle checks are crucial to avoid breakdowns, which have already seen a 13% increase during last year’s bank holiday. Staying hydrated and planning for delays will be essential for a smooth getaway this weekend.
