Beijing Faces Severe Flooding as Typhoon Dolphin Hits

Beijing is currently experiencing severe flooding due to the remnants of Typhoon Dolphin, which has prompted mass evacuations across the city. Authorities have warned that the capital could receive over 150mm of rain in just 24 hours, with some areas potentially exceeding 200mm. This amount represents more than one-third of the city’s average annual rainfall, raising concerns about flooding and landslides.

In response to the imminent threat, thousands of residents have been relocated from high-risk areas, including care facilities and construction zones. The heavy rainfall has disrupted daily life significantly, with hundreds of bus routes suspended and metro services operating at reduced speeds. Tourists have also been evacuated from various attractions, highlighting the widespread impact of the storm.

The situation is exacerbated by the ongoing El Niño weather pattern, which is linked to increased frequency and intensity of storms in the region. This year has already seen record-breaking rainfall in parts of central China, indicating a troubling trend that could affect future weather patterns and infrastructure resilience.

As the storm continues to bring heavy rain, local authorities are on high alert, deploying emergency teams and enhancing communication capabilities in vulnerable areas. The potential for further flooding and landslides remains a critical concern, prompting ongoing monitoring and response efforts.
