A man has been arrested following a dramatic two-hour stand-off with police in north Belfast, which resulted in multiple injuries and significant property damage. The incident began shortly after midnight when officers responded to reports of an assault on a woman at a residence on Lepper Street.
Upon arrival, police found the woman and another man with facial injuries. The suspect, who was later discovered hiding in a wardrobe, threatened officers with a knife, prompting a response from an Armed Response Unit. As tensions escalated, the man climbed onto the roof and began throwing roof tiles at the police, injuring one officer who was subsequently taken to the hospital.
The police managed to subdue the suspect using incapacitant spray, and with the help of a trained negotiator, he was brought down and arrested. The incident caused considerable damage, with seven vehicles, including five police cars, suffering substantial damage.
Authorities are now conducting an investigation and have urged anyone with information or footage of the event to come forward. The Police Service of Northern Ireland highlighted the potential danger posed by the suspect’s actions, which could have led to life-threatening injuries for both officers and the public.
