The Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast is investing £3 million to refurbish its iconic cranes, Samson and Goliath, as part of a larger £100 million investment by its Spanish owners, Navantia. This overhaul is crucial as the yard prepares for a significant defence contract involving the Royal Navy’s Fleet Solid Support programme.

The cranes, which are vital for the integration and assembly of three new support ships, will undergo extensive mechanical and technological upgrades. This includes overhauling engines and replacing key components to ensure they can operate at full capacity. The refurbishment aims to restore the cranes to their best condition, reflecting the pride the local community has in these landmarks.

Navantia’s investment also includes enhancements to the fabrication hall and new cutting equipment, indicating a commitment to modernising the shipyard. The first ship, RFA Resurgent, is expected to have its construction blocks arrive in Belfast by early 2027, marking a significant milestone for the yard.

This investment not only secures jobs at the shipyard but also positions Belfast as a key player in the UK’s naval capabilities, reinforcing the importance of local infrastructure in national defence strategies.
