As the new academic year begins, scammers are exploiting student anxiety surrounding loan payments, hoping to siphon off part of the £2.6 billion in maintenance funds. Students may receive alarming messages claiming their bank details have been altered, prompting them to log in to what appears to be the official Student Loans Company (SLC) website. In reality, these links lead to fraudulent sites designed to harvest personal information.
Once students unknowingly provide their details, scammers can quickly access their real accounts and redirect funds to themselves. Last year, £519,000 was lost to such scams, affecting 168 students, although many fraud attempts were thwarted before any money was taken.
The SLC is urging students to remain vigilant, especially during key payment months like September, January, and April. They advise against clicking on links in unsolicited messages and recommend logging into accounts directly through the official Gov.uk website. Students should also avoid discussing payment dates on social media to reduce the risk of being targeted.
If students suspect they have been scammed, they should change their passwords immediately and report any fraudulent communications. The SLC assures that victims can receive replacement payments, ensuring they do not suffer financial losses due to these scams.
