At 84, Bob Carpenter stands out as Britain’s oldest train manager, still passionately working for Avanti West Coast. His dedication to the railway industry stems from a lifelong love for trains, which he describes as giving him a purpose each day. Carpenter’s journey began in clerical roles at Royal Mail before he joined British Railways in 1992, eventually becoming a train manager.

His part-time role allows him to maintain a connection with the job he adores, emphasizing the importance of having something meaningful to engage with in later life. Carpenter’s commitment to his work has created a familial atmosphere among colleagues, highlighting the bonds formed through shared experiences on the job.

Interestingly, his grandson has followed in his footsteps, joining the same company and echoing the magic of the railway life that Carpenter instilled in him. This generational connection showcases the enduring appeal of the railway profession and the values of dedication and passion.

Avanti West Coast’s customer experience director praised Carpenter as a role model, illustrating that age should not deter anyone from pursuing their dream job. His story serves as an inspiring reminder of the joy and fulfillment that work can bring, regardless of age.
