A recent study suggests that a drug could potentially prevent the long-term effects of trauma if administered during the traumatic event itself. Researchers in Munich and Stockholm found that a compound called SAFit2, when given to mother mice during a stressful period, allowed their offspring to avoid the social disadvantages typically associated with early adversity. This finding challenges the conventional view of trauma as something that must be managed over time, highlighting the possibility of intervention at the moment of stress.
The study indicates that trauma’s impact may not be immediately visible but can shape social hierarchies and behaviours throughout life. By blocking a protein called FKBP51, the drug appears to normalise stress responses in the offspring, effectively erasing the social costs of a difficult start. This suggests a significant shift in how we might approach trauma treatment, focusing on prevention rather than solely on management.
However, the research also raises questions about its applicability to humans, as SAFit2 is still in the experimental stage and has not been tested for safety in humans. Moreover, the study only involved male mice, leaving open the question of how this treatment might affect females. Identifying individuals at risk before trauma occurs remains a challenge, underscoring the complexity of trauma responses.
While the drug could take a decade to develop for human use, its implications for treating stress-related disorders could be profound. Unlike current treatments that primarily address symptoms, this approach aims to tackle the underlying causes of trauma, potentially transforming mental health care in the future.
