Brussels to End Shared E-Scooter Rentals by 2027

Brussels has announced a ban on shared e-scooters starting January 2027, a decision driven by rising safety concerns and misuse. The city has seen a significant increase in accidents, with 666 injuries reported in 2025 alone, marking a 26% rise from the previous year. This alarming trend has prompted officials to act, as the design of e-scooters often leads to severe injuries, particularly to the head and face.

Moreover, the misuse of e-scooters has extended beyond accidents; they have reportedly been linked to organised crime, including drug trafficking and violent incidents. In 2025, e-scooters were involved in 25 shootings, raising serious public safety issues. The government aims to clear the streets of these vehicles, which have also contributed to pavement clutter, hindering mobility for vulnerable populations.

As Brussels moves away from e-scooters, it plans to enhance its bike-sharing network and increase the availability of e-bikes. This shift reflects a broader trend across Europe, with cities like Madrid, Paris, and Prague already having banned shared e-scooters. The decision underscores a growing recognition of the need for safer urban transport solutions.

The implications of this ban may extend beyond Brussels, influencing transport policies in other cities grappling with similar issues. As shared e-scooters fade from the urban landscape, the focus will likely shift towards more sustainable and safer alternatives, reshaping how residents navigate their cities.
