Bus Drivers Strike Over Extreme Heat in Cabs

More than 1,500 bus drivers in North London and Essex have begun striking due to unbearable heat conditions in their cabs, which can reach up to 44C. The drivers, represented by Unite the Union, are demanding air conditioning to ensure their safety and comfort while working. Without it, they face serious health risks, including heatstroke, which can lead to dangerous situations on the road.

The strikes come during the UK’s fifth heatwave of the summer, highlighting a growing concern over working conditions in extreme weather. Drivers have reported feeling drowsy and fatigued, raising alarms about the potential for fatal accidents if they lose consciousness while driving. The situation has prompted calls for immediate action from Arriva, the bus operator, to improve working conditions.

Despite advice from Transport for London (TfL) that drivers can refuse to operate buses in extreme heat, many fear repercussions from their employers. This fear of sanctions has left drivers feeling trapped in unsafe working environments, with some reporting incidents of colleagues passing out due to the heat.

The ongoing strikes are not just about immediate working conditions; they reflect a broader issue of employee welfare in the transport sector. As temperatures rise, the demand for better safety measures and working conditions is becoming increasingly urgent, with drivers advocating for necessary changes to prevent future tragedies.
