Cairngorms Wildfire: Residents Return Amid Criticism of Response

Residents of Nethy Bridge are returning home after being evacuated due to a wildfire in the Cairngorms, which was declared a major incident. The fire, which has been burning for ten days, prompted significant emergency response efforts, including the establishment of fire breaks to protect the community. However, locals have expressed frustration over the delayed declaration of the major incident and the perceived lack of communication from authorities.

First Minister John Swinney acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, stating that the government and emergency services would continue to monitor the fire until it is fully extinguished. Despite the lifting of the evacuation order, concerns remain about the adequacy of the response and the impact on local residents.

The wildfire, which affected around six square kilometres, required the efforts of over 500 firefighters. While progress has been made in controlling the blaze, the incident has raised questions about emergency preparedness and the effectiveness of communication strategies during crises.

As residents return, they are advised to remain cautious, especially regarding smoke exposure. The situation highlights the need for improved coordination and timely responses in future wildfire incidents, particularly in vulnerable areas like the Cairngorms.
