Calls for Ban on First Cousin Marriage Gain Momentum in UK

The debate over first cousin marriage in the UK is intensifying, with calls for a ban gaining traction among politicians. Shadow Transport Secretary Richard Holden has urged Prime Minister Andy Burnham to support a prohibition, citing concerns about its prevalence in certain communities, particularly among British Pakistanis and Irish Travellers. Holden argues that such marriages can lead to significant health risks and social pressures, especially when they occur across generations.

The issue has been highlighted by a recent case where a Sudanese migrant was allowed to remain in the UK due to her marriage to a first cousin. This has raised alarms that the practice may be exploited to circumvent immigration laws. Holden insists that the government must act swiftly to address this loophole, emphasizing that public sentiment is largely in favour of a ban.

Holden’s previous attempts to introduce legislation were blocked, but with a new Private Member’s Bill set to be discussed early next year, there is renewed hope for change. He claims that many within the affected communities support the ban but feel unable to voice their opinions due to fear of backlash from community leaders.

The Ministry of Justice has acknowledged the serious concerns surrounding first cousin marriages and is considering whether legislation is the appropriate response. As discussions progress, the implications for immigration policy and community dynamics could be significant, potentially reshaping societal norms around marriage in the UK.
