Calls for Immigration Law Reform After Shabir Ahmed’s Release

Maggie Oliver, a whistleblower on grooming gangs, has sharply criticized the government’s failure to deport Shabir Ahmed, the Rochdale ringleader, who was released after serving 14 years for serious sexual offences. She argues that Ahmed should have been deported immediately after his conviction in 2012, highlighting a systemic failure in handling such cases.

The Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, is expected to announce changes to the 1971 Immigration Act, which currently prevents Ahmed’s deportation to Pakistan. Oliver points out that this legislation is outdated and should have been revised long ago, especially given the public outcry surrounding Ahmed’s release.

Oliver emphasizes that Ahmed’s case is not isolated; it reflects a broader issue of thousands of abusers operating across the UK. She believes that the government’s reactive approach to public pressure is insufficient and calls for proactive measures to protect victims and ensure justice.

The potential changes to immigration law could have significant implications for how the UK handles similar cases in the future. However, Oliver warns that even if the law is amended, the real test will be whether Pakistan accepts Ahmed back, highlighting ongoing challenges in the deportation process.
